Hemorrhoids Symptoms and Treatment
If you don't know yet, hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus.
Let me explain...
Hemorrhoids are similar to varicose veins you might see on a person's legs. When bulging hemorrhoid veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn or itch. This can become very painful, and bleeding may even occur.
Fact: about half of the population experiences hemorrhoids by the age of 50. Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women.
Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them.
There are two types of hemorrhoids (external and internal) and the symptoms for both are different.
Yes, you read that right...
#1. External Hemorrhoid Symptoms
External hemorrhoids cause most of the hemorrhoid symptoms we commonly hear about such as pain, burning, and itching.
#2. Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms
Internal hemorrhoids are a lot less painful and thus its symptoms are harder to detect. This form of hemorrhoids is less painful because of the lack of nerve endings inside your anal canal. The basic symptom of internal hemorrhoids is itchiness. Another good sign of internal hemorrhoids is a slight bleeding (you’ll be able to see some blood on toilet paper or in your toilet bowl) after a visit to the toilet.
Bear with me, because I'm going to reveal you a medical treatment of hemorrhoids...
Here's the real kicker:
Medical treatment of hemorrhoids is aimed initially at relieving symptoms. Measures to reduce symptoms include:
- warm tub baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes
- application of a hemorroidal cream or
suppository to the affected area for a limited time
Can hemorrhoids be prevented?
The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to keep stools soft so they pass easily, thus decreasing pressure and straining, and to empty bowels as soon as possible after the urge occurs. Exercise, including walking, and increased fiber in the diet help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass.
In some cases, hemorrhoids must be treated endoscopically or surgically. These methods are used to shrink and destroy the hemorrhoidal tissue. The doctor will perform the procedure during an office or hospital visit.
A number of methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of internal hemorrhoids. These techniques include:
- Rubber band ligation. A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation, and the hemorrhoid withers away within a few days.
- Sclerotherapy. A chemical solution is injected around the blood vessel to shrink the hemorrhoid.
- Infrared coagulation. A special device is used to burn hemorrhoidal tissue.
- Hemorrhoidectomy. Occasionally, extensive or severe internal or external hemorrhoids may require removal by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy.
Final note: hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse.
